CarGearBench

We don’t test the gear. We read the people who do — and we show our working.

About

Who writes this, and how to argue with it.

CarGearBench is an independent reference for car gear. It collects measurements published by named independent testers and reprints them with the conditions they were taken under, so a reader can check a figure instead of trusting it.

What this is

A small site with a narrow claim: the number, and where it came from. We do not run a laboratory and we do not pretend to. What we do is read the people who do, put their figures side by side, state what each one was measured under, and mark clearly which figures are measurements and which are the manufacturer's claims. The method page sets out the rules in full, including the ones that stop us publishing.

Who writes it

It is written and maintained by one person, working with AI assistance for research and drafting, and every figure is checked against the source it is attributed to before it goes on a page.

We are not going to invent a byline. Sites like this one usually introduce a founder with two decades in the trade and a photograph in a workshop, and search engines reward it — but on a site whose entire proposition is that you can check what it tells you, a fabricated author would be the one claim you could not check. The evidence for anything here is the source link next to it, not the person who typed it.

Corrections

If a figure on this site is wrong, we want to know, and it is the easiest kind of message for us to act on. Point at the page and the number and we will check it against the source.

When we change something material we say what changed rather than quietly editing it — a correction that is invisible is indistinguishable from never having been wrong, which would make every other page here worth less. There is a worked example of that on the pressure washer page, where a manufacturer's own figures dissolved a recommendation we had already published.

If you are one of our sources

This site is built on other people's testing. We reprint figures with attribution and a link to the exact page they came from, never a whole article, and we send readers to the original. If you have measured something we have cited and we have described your conditions wrongly, tell us and we will fix it the same day. If you would rather not be cited at all, tell us and we will remove it.

How it pays for itself

Product links are affiliate links, mostly to Amazon, and we earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. It is the only money the site makes: no advertising, no sponsored placements, no payment from any manufacturer for coverage or position. The full statement is on the disclosure page.
